Student Voice at St Mary Magdalene

Student voice is central to life at St Mary Magdalene and reflects our ethos of living as family, growing in faith, and being united in fellowship. We believe that when students feel heard, known and valued, they flourish academically, socially and emotionally.

Living as Family:

Because every student is known as an individual within our school family, we provide regular opportunities for them to share their views on key aspects of school life, including the co‑curriculum, learning, behaviour, and their mental health and wellbeing. Students learn that their voice matters and that trusting relationships are the foundation of honest communication. Weekly prefect‑led drop‑in sessions further support this ethos, ensuring that any student can speak openly in a safe, supportive environment.

Growing in Faith:

Our inclusive approach means we journey with each student from where they are, listening carefully to their experiences, needs and aspirations. Student voice activities encourage reflection, empathy and responsibility—qualities nurtured in our collective worship and pastoral life. Most recently, we have taken part in the King’s College London longitudinal study on young people’s mental and biological health. In joining this pioneering research, we honour our commitment to supporting and nourishing the wellbeing of our students, allowing their lived experiences to shape how we walk alongside them.

United in Fellowship:

As a diverse all‑through community, we believe that unity comes from mutual trust and shared purpose. Prefects and student leaders play a central role in representing their peers, modelling the fellowship we aim to cultivate across the school. The insights gained from student surveys, focus groups and leadership meetings are used meaningfully to shape school development, strengthen our curriculum, and improve the day‑to‑day life of every young person. By listening to students and acting on their feedback, we show that their contributions help build the community we all share.
