Christ Church's Wider Offer

"Pupils enjoy all the special things the school has to offer. During the inspection, for example, children in Reception took great delight in learning and exploring in the woodland area. Pupils in Year 6 enjoyed painting in the community garden...The community garden gives pupils the opportunity to take on responsibilities, such as looking after bees. It also provides them with links to the wider community, such as the local residents who visit the garden." Ofsted Inspection, November 2021.

At our school, we are proud to be research-informed. This means our staff actively engage with educational research to ensure that our teaching approaches are evidence-based and continually improving. Teachers regularly reflect on their practice, explore new strategies and evaluate what has the greatest impact on children’s learning and wellbeing both inside and outside the classroom.

The impact of this approach is clear: pupils benefit from high-quality teaching, consistent practice and innovative ideas grounded in proven research. As a result, children make strong progress, develop confidence and experience a rich, thoughtfully designed curriculum that supports both academic success and personal growth.

Collective Worship (CW)

Collective Worship sessions plays an important role in our school life. It is a time when pupils and staff come together every day to reflect, pray, sing, and think about Christian values such as kindness, forgiveness and respect.

Every Friday, at 9.00 am, Parents and Carers are welcome to join us in Celebration Collective Worship; this is to recognise students’ achievements, good behaviour and positive attitude. It supports the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of pupils while reinforcing the school’s Christian ethos.

Christ Church’s Got Talent

This event is important for the school community because it gives students a chance to showcase their unique skills and creativity, whether in singing, dancing, comedy, sports, art, or other talents. It helps build confidence and self-esteem by allowing students to perform in front of others in a supportive environment. It also encourages respect and appreciation of different abilities, helping to create a positive and inclusive school community.

Playtime and Lunchtime Provision

Our playtime and lunchtime provision offer exciting opportunities for children to learn through play. Den building is especially popular, encouraging teamwork, communication and problem-solving. As pupils work together to design and create their structures, they develop resilience, cooperation and leadership skills in a fun and active way.

Sporting activities such as ping pong, hockey, volleyball and basketball promote physical fitness, coordination and healthy competition. Through sport, children learn the importance of fairness, perseverance and supporting one another. These activities help build confidence while strengthening friendships across year groups.

Our “Mud Kitchen” further enhances creativity and imagination. Children explore role play, experiment with natural materials and engage in conversations inspired by different cultures and cuisines. This supports communication skills, cultural awareness and an appreciation of the diverse world around us. Together, our lunchtime activities create a positive, inclusive environment where every child can thrive socially, physically and creatively.

Music

We deeply value Music and how this can support our children’s wider development.  Our curriculum gives children the confidence to know that they can be part of making and enjoying music. Ms Blades leads a rich and exciting Music curriculum across our primary phase and encourages children to attend instrumental tuition and choir opportunities. We also join with other SDBE schools and Greenwich Schools for borough-wide music events such as the annual Blackheath Halls Concert and the Year 6 Leavers service at Southwark Cathedral. Music is at the heart of many school shows and events with unique songs used to enhance each performance.

Termly talent shows are whole-school, inclusive celebrations of music where children can build their confidence in performing and sharing across a range of musical instruments, singing styles and genres. See more here.

Modern Foreign Languages – French and Spanish

Our MfL curriculum enables pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning. All classes have access to a very high-quality foreign languages curriculum using the Primary Languages Network scheme of work and resources. Teachers use this scheme of work and adapt it to the needs of their children. Pupils are taught by a combination of class teachers and secondary language specialists. Our curriculum implementation can be seen in learning outcomes, through pupil voice and regular drop-ins that reflect the schemes of work being taught in each unit.

PE

We are proud to be an active school that provides an inclusive P.E. curriculum as well as a range of extracurricular activities to engage and stretch all children. Inclusion is central to our ethos, so lessons are carefully planned and delivered to ensure all children participate actively and experience success. We teach a wide range of team sports such as basketball, football and cricket and children compete in numerous borough-wide events, with selective teams and inclusive squads to engage children of all levels of confidence. The pupils engage in competitive (both against self and against others across the campuses and schools within the borough) and cooperative activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations. These include competing against other schools through swimming galas, Tag rugby tournaments, and cross-campus football matches.

The primary phase has a Sports Coach who supports the delivery of PE lessons, provides specialist PE skills and knowledge, coaching and after-school sports clubs.

Forest School

We offer the chance for our Year One Class children to learn outside their classroom on a weekly basis. These sessions are led by a trained, in school, Forest School Leader and take place in our own dedicated Forest School area within the school grounds. See here to learn more about this exceptional offer.

Dance and Performing Arts Offer

Pupils at Christ Church have the opportunity to work with specialist dance teachers who bring professional expertise and passion into every lesson. During these sessions, children develop strong technical foundations, refine their coordination and musicality, and learn the discipline, focus and teamwork that dance inspires. They are able to explore a wide range of dance styles and musical genres, broadening their cultural awareness and creative expression while building confidence and resilience.

Our dance specialist also leads an exciting after-school Performing Arts Club, where children delve further into the world of musical theatre, dance and drama. Through rehearsals, character work and performance opportunities, pupils grow in confidence, creativity and stage presence — all while having fun and discovering their talents.
