Many shall not live by bread alone…

…but by every word that comes from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4).

We are now in the season of Lent and as the cloths are changed to purple, so we are encouraged to become thoughtful, prayerful and focussed on God. The Bible Quote is from Jesus being tempted by the devil in the wilderness during his 40 days of fasting and praying – preparing himself perhaps for the 3 full years of ministry, his death and resurrection.

Many children and young people are talking about something to give up for Lent, whilst others are talking about starting something different for Lent. In the times when we do that different thing – we are encouraged to pray or think on God’s love for us as we miss what we have given up or start the thing we’ve chosen to start.

Maybe in the past you’ve given up chocolate, or come away from social media or decided to pray more. The challenge we are setting through the Chapel space this Lent is to engage with the Bible more:

Think about the parts we know and the parts we could happily retell to others. A story, a miracle or a line from the Psalms.3

Think about how you feel about the Bible too. Is it long, boring, interesting or intriguing. Which bits make sense and which have you confused?

Think about what the Bible could give you if you picked it up and read the right parts. A word of encouragement, a sense of worth or direction or the gift of peace or the knowledge that God is with us.

My prayer for you is that you are able to pick up a Bible and read some of it.

Sign up to #livelent on twitter or download the #livelent app for a daily reading and prayer to help you through this 40 days of doing things differently.

May we celebrate Easter together having fully engaged with all the God wants to share with us.

Amen
