OUR GOAL IS TO PROVIDE A SAFE AND CARING ENVIRONMENT WHERE CHILDREN CAN GAIN A POSITIVE APPROACH TO SCHOOL AND LEARNING.

The children will learn to care for and respect each other, whilst learning how to be part of a group. Good nursery education is crucial to a child's formative years, and fosters an enthusiasm and confidence that will remain with them throughout their school life. Our experienced and dedicated staff help the children to become successful learners, confident individuals, and effective contributors to society. Children learn through play and structured lessons with a balance of free choice. It is widely accepted that children in this age group absorb and achieve more than at any other stage in their school life, and this makes choosing the right nursery school vital.

Our Nursery school has 26 part-time places for children 3 years old and above in the morning. The session begins at 8:45 am and finishes at 11:45 am.

CURRICULUM

At St Mary Magdalene, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. At the Nursery, every child is given as much individual attention as they need in order for them to realise their full potential.

As a nursery, we do our very best to provide the children with a variety of activities to develop their learning and development set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

The children are encouraged to become independent learners through:

  • Playing and Exploring – Engagement
  • Active learning – Motivation
  • Creating and thinking critically-Thinking.

The children are encouraged to become independent learner’s during their time in the nursery. The nursery staff know the importance of encouraging and helping them to try out new activities and to judge risks for themselves. We also realise how important it is to praise the children in our care, noting effort such as how the children concentrate, try different approaches, persists, solves problems and has new ideas.

THE EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE IS MADE UP OF SEVEN AREAS OF LEARNING
Prime Areas:
1. PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

At the nursery, children are provided with a positive environment to learn and are given experiences and support that help them develop a positive sense of themselves and others, as well as good social skills and respect for each other. We know how important these skills are for a very young child to learn before they can begin to learn anything else. The six Golden Rules of the school are sung daily by the children as well as songs about feelings and what is the right thing to do whilst at school.

2. COMMUNICATION AND LANGUAGE

With the support of their teachers, children are encouraged to develop their communication, language and listening skills whilst also building on their reading and writing abilities. They are provided with a series of stimulants such as different role-pay areas, puppetry and life experiences-watching chicks hatch out of an egg to support them with new vocabulary and confidence to talk about what they have seen. Circle time activities and games also provide the children with opportunities to talk and listen to peers and their points of view.

3. PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

With our wide range of equipment and outside area, children are given opportunities to be active and interactive, and to gain skills in co-ordination, control, manipulation, and movement. Understanding the importance of physical activity and healthy choices in relation to food are both supported. Children have access to a variety of one-handed tools to develop their fine motor skills and in turn support their handwriting/ letter and number formation.

Specific Areas:

4. LITERACY

Using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds programme, we encourage children to link sounds to letters, which helps them to begin reading and writing. They are given access to a wide range of reading materials to both ignite their interest, and practice their newly-acquired skills. Story time takes place daily where the children listen to their favourite stories, fairy tales and non-fiction stories.

5. MATHEMATICS

Children are supported in developing their understanding of problem solving, reasoning and numeracy in a broad range of contexts - they can explore, enjoy, learn, practice and talk about their developing understanding. They are constantly provided with opportunities to practice these skills and to gain confidence. The children follow the Maths Mastery and White Rose Maths programme which provides a lot of wonderful ‘hand’s on ‘activities which link to number, shape, space, measure and problem-solving challenges.

6. UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD

In this area of learning and development, children are encouraged to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding to make sense of the world. Their learning is supported by offering opportunities for them to encounter mini beasts, people, plants, and objects in their natural environment and in real life situations – they will often undertake practical experiments, working with a range of materials. Children have the opportunity to work with ICT, remote control working toys and cameras.

7. EXPRESSIVE ARTS AND DESIGN

Children are provided with opportunities to explore their creativity through art, craft, music, dance, role-play activities and IT. Creative play enables children to make connections between one area of learning and another, thereby enhancing their understanding of what to do and how to express themselves in different ways.

SETTLING IN

At St Mary Magdalene Nursery, we have an ‘Open Day’ in June for parents and their children to come and visit the Nursery environment and show their children the inside and outside area and what they have to do such as self - registration. This is an opportunity for parents and children to see their new school and to meet the teachers in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

New parents will be asked to complete a simple questionnaire to help us find out useful information about their child and the rest of their family. This will help us to make your child's first day at our nursery a happy and comfortable one.

Our uniform consists of a yellow polo shirt and a burgundy sweatshirt/cardigan, both with the school logo on. A school bag, and a clothes bag are also required. These can all be purchased at Khalsa Schoolwear.
