IN THE KOINONIA FEDERATION, WE AIM TO DEVELOP IN CHILDREN A LOVE OF NUMBER AND THE ASPIRATION TO SOLVE PROBLEMS.
Reasoning and Explaining is a paramount part of the mathematical curriculum and we are practising Let’s ThinkMaths to encourage children to develop these skills. Speaking and listening is encouraged in the learning environment and we aim to give children the confidence to talk about how and why they have used particular strategies. We have a strong emphasis on mental calculation and children are encouraged to learn their number bonds and times tables developing speed, accuracy and fluency.
As Mathematics is such an important life skill, we have not only embraced the new curriculum we have also introduced a new ‘Mastery’ approach to our lessons. This provides opportunities for pupils to spend longer on key mathematical concepts, most noticeably number. During these longer units, pupils will see mathematics in a real-life context, before moving at an appropriate pace from the concrete or pictorial approach (supported by manipulatives such as Numicon) to the abstract.
In order to further promote enjoyment and engagement to support progress and overall attainment, children will often use ICT in lessons with every class having access to iPads and laptops. Each campus has a subscription to Mathletics, a popular home learning tool that encourages children to continue to develop their mathematical skills outside of school.
Here at Koinonia Federation we strive to put the fun into learning so that pupils develop mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills, and of course a love of number.
We follow a Royal Borough of Greenwich Scheme for Math’s which focuses on all aspects of the Math’s curriculum including mental and instant recall. We are developing reasoning and problem solving skills to encourage the children to make connections and explain their thinking. Children are encouraged to use practical materials and manipulatives to develop their understanding and their explorative skills.
HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD AT HOME?
It is encouraged that parents and carers talk to their children about Math’s in the real world using mathematical words and phrases so it becomes familiar to the children. Math’s is everywhere around us so you can be as creative and as imaginative as you want.
Here are some suggestions of the things you can do:
Children can have fun:
- measuring their height and working out how much they've grown
- on car journeys - playing number-plate games, adding and subtracting with road signs, thinking about speed by dividing distance by time
- at the shops - weighing fruit and vegetables, budgeting with pocket money, working out the relative value of products by comparing prices and weight.
- By cutting food using fraction, decimals and percentages i.e. can we cut the toast in quarters.
- By recognising coins in the home and asking children what coins we need to pay for products.
- in the kitchen - with weighing and measuring, and temperature and timings
- Making models and origami shapes
- Telling the time and comparing digital and analogue times.
- Playing estimating games, amounts in a jar, cereal in a bowl etc.
- Thinking about patterns in the natural world and using beads and pasta.
- Playing instant recall games i.e. number bonds times tables (this can happen anywhere!)
- Making up songs and poems about shapes or number.
We teach the children to have mental images and pictures before they move onto the formal written method of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This helps to deepen their understanding and provides them with multiple strategies to solve problems.
The calculation policy will show the different strategies the children are taught throughout their Primary Education.
We encourage children to get involved in Maths in the wider community by attending Math’s competitions. We have attended the Maths 24 Challenge which is run by the Mayor of London Charity. We have attended local competitions with other schools and training centres.
