MATHS VISION

Our vision is to provide all children with full access to the broad and relevant mathematics curriculum, enabling all children to achieve confidence and competence ‘mastery’ in mathematics. The majority of pupils will progress through the curriculum content at the same pace and differentiation will provide opportunities for deeper knowledge and individual support and intervention.

CURRICULUM STATEMENT

Our Intent

‘The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils: Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately’

Through mathematics we teach children how to make sense of the world around them through developing their ability to use number, calculate, reason and solve problems. This helps children to understand relationships and patterns in both number and space in their everyday lives. Our school follows the White Rose Maths Curriculum, combined with quality first teaching to ensure that all children access a broad, balanced and challenging curriculum. This Curriculum is bold, provides breadth and balance and is relevant and differentiated to suit the needs of all children. It is flexible, motivating to all pupils, thus encouraging success at all levels. Mathematics at our school is a creative and highly interconnected discipline, providing the solution to some intriguing problems. Teachers focus on the use of vocabulary and language and children have regular access to problem solving and reasoning problems.

A high-quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. At our school, we strive to offer all children the opportunity to experience a wide range of experiences surrounding maths, including cross-curricular opportunities, NSPCC Number day and maths games during enrichment time.

RESOURCES

We follow the White Rose Schemes of planning, which can be found here.

We also use:

TimesTable Rockstars to support and encourage regular practise, if your child is in Year 2 or above, they should have a login. Please contact the school office if you need the details.

Education City

Purple Mash

All children should have log ins for Education City and Purple Mash, please contact the school office should you need these.

CALCULATION POLICY

We teach the children to have mental images and pictures before they move onto the formal written methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This helps to deepen their understanding and provides them with multiple strategies to solve problems.

The calculation policy will show the different strategies the children are taught throughout their Primary Education.

COMPETITIONS

We encourage children to get involved in Maths in the wider community by attending Math’s competitions.  We have attended the Maths 24 Challenge which is run by the Mayor of London Charity.  We have attended local competitions with other schools and training centres.
