THE KOINONIA FEDERATION’S VISION FOR SCIENCE IS TO IGNITE PUPILS' CURIOSITY AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO CONFIDENTLY EXPLORE AND DISCOVER THE WORLD AROUND THEM, SO THAT THEY DEVELOP A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD WE LIVE IN.

Through our practical and enjoyable curriculum we aim to inspire and excite our children and foster a thirst for knowledge.

Through science, pupils understand how major scientific ideas contribute to technological change - impacting on industry, business and medicine and improving quality of life.

In science, children are encouraged to observe, ask questions, test ideas, make deductions and predictions. As well as working within the classroom, science lessons provide a great opportunity to explore our local environment and work outdoors.

In Reception, children learn through Understanding the World. We encourage the children to explore the world around them and talk about the things they notice. Forest School sessions give our children regular opportunities to explore different aspects of the natural environment.

In Years 1 to 6, we teach science skills to ensure that children develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Children 'work scientifically' by observing over time; seeking patterns; identifying, classifying and grouping; comparative and fair testing; carrying out controlled investigations and researching using secondary sources.

AIMS

We aim in teaching to ensure children:

  • Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • To develop a respect for all living things and the environments in which they reside
  • To promote the learning of scientific skills, understanding and key vocabulary through the use of problem solving
  • To observe, communicate and record information in a variety of ways including through ICT

SCIENCE ANNUAL OVERVIEW & TOPIC SUMMARY

Within our primary phase we have set the National Curriculum programme of study topics taught over Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 into an annual overview. We teach science in the EYFS through our learning themes as set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. Science makes a significant contribution to developing a child’s knowledge and understanding of the world, an element that forms the EYFS end of phase profile.
